Throughout the year various Universities offer the opportunity for high school students to attend an honor band. This event is typically a recruiting tool for Universities but also serves as a wonderful learning experience for the students who attend. Most Universities invite well known professionals to serve as a clinician or they may have current faculty rehearse and conduct the group. Generally, an honor band event will consist of a day or more of rehearsal and a concert at the end for the community and parents. Students are usually charged a fee and are expected to pay for their own room and board. Mr. Raney only attends one Honor Band each year, usually the University of North Alabama, so parental chaperones are needed if students are to attend others. Students may use a college day to attend an honor band or it will be an excused 2x absence. Most honor bands select students who are likely to attend their College/University or students who are average or above performers. The director usually rates the student according to their ability/attitude and the University selects students from a wide range of schools. Hundreds of students may apply but only a select number of students from each school will be selected to participate. As Honor Band Events become available they will be listed below. Again, it is the responsibility of the student to inform Mr. Raney that they are interested in a particular Honor Band event.
