How do I become a drum major? PDF Print E-mail
Drum major tryouts are held each year near the end of the spring semester. A date will be announced and everyone interested in trying out should be put on the list. A panel of qualified judges will be used to select the drum major.

Requirements
  • Students should demonstrate high character and leadership abilities.
  • Students should demonstrate a commitment to the band to the highest level.
  • Students should be an upcoming 10th, 11th, or 12th grader and have at least one year of marching experience with the Buckhorn High School Band.
  • Students will be asked to perform the following:
    • Calls such as attention, mark time, forward march, backwards march, halt and horns up while demonstrating each of the calls.
    • Demonstrate the following conducting patterns: 4/4 fast and slow (subdivided), 3/4 fast and slow (subdivided), 2/4 fast and slow (subdivided).
    • Perform a salute.
    • Conduct to a recorded band piece demonstrating dynamics, releases and cues. This music can be borrowed from Mr. Raney's collection of music.
    • Answer questions from an interview process
