Expectations Advanced Band is a performance based class; therefore, in order to participate each student is expected to:
Any student that does not fulfill the above requirements/expectations or is determined to be unreliable may be removed from performing with the band under the discretion of the director. Grading Procedures 60% Test Grade 40% Daily Grade Test grades are determined from performances. Each performance will count as one test grade. If you arrive late or leave early this test grade will be lowered. If you do not attend you will receive a zero. Competitions or any other performance that is being adjudicated will count twice as much as a regular performance. A playing test may be added at any time during the semester but will be announced in advance. Daily grades come from participation in class and extra rehearsals. If you arrive late or leave early this grade will be lowered. If you do not attend you will receive a zero. You will have a class participation grade that will be reduced (usually by 5 pts) each time you must be called down for not following instructions disrupting the class or missing class with an unexcused absence. Daily grades may also come from turning in signed sheets, uniforms and music on time. If a student must miss a performance or rehearsal due to a family death or other major emergency the student should return a written excuse from a parent or legal guardian within 3 school days of the missed assignment. Any absence to a performance or rehearsal will no longer have exemption status to final exam. Rehearsal Procedures (Concert Band) Class will begin as soon as the bell rings. It is the student's responsibility to prepare their instrument prior to this time. If a student is not ready to begin class at this time disciplinary measures will be administered. Rehearsal is not a time to practice parts; therefore, a student must have his/her part prepared before walking into the band room. A pencil will be used to mark the music appropriately. (DO NOT USE PEN!!) If a particular section needs work as a group the section leader may call for after school sectionals that each student is expected to attend. Mr. Raney must approve these sectionals before they are announced. All absences must be made-up with the section leader or a person appointed by the director. When the conductor steps on the podium the student is expected to begin rehearsal. Talking is a major disruption and will not be tolerated. Students are expected to study their music and be prepared when it is their turn to play. Perfection is vital and is obtainable only when the student understands this process and adheres to this concept. Rehearsal will end a few minutes before the bell rings. Students are not to leave the band room before the bell rings. Music Folders/Textbooks Each student will receive a leather bound folder at the beginning of the spring semester containing music and materials used throughout the concert season. Each folder will be numbered and is considered our "textbook" for the band class. At the end of the semester this folder will be returned containing ALL music and materials handed out throughout the semester or it will be considered incomplete or missing. All missing "text books" will be reported to the administrator in charge of textbooks and the value of each folder will be $40. Signatures I have read and agree to abide by all contents mentioned in the Buckhorn High School Band Syllabus.
